Missions and Stories

by White Feather

I think missions and stories are definitely not the same. Some people will play a board game with a specific mission in mind, such as to win. Others will play the board game just for the experience and fun of playing it. To them, the mission of winning the game isn't so important. After all, when you win, the game is over.

When you play a game with a specific intent of winning (mission) every aspect of the game is seen from the perspective of that mission and non-mission oriented aspects become less important and are often ignored. But all aspects are part of the overall story of playing the game. So to be fully into the story of the game it is best not to have a mission so that all the aspects of the game can be enjoyed and understood.

A story is something that we write as we play, so to speak. A story is in the NOW because we are constantly writing it with each breath we take. A mission is something that is connected to an illusory future and is therefore not in the NOW.
